WHY VISIT THE DENTAL HYGIENIST?
One of the most important reasons for visiting the dental hygienist regularly is the removal of the bacterial colonies (plaque) from between the teeth and in the crevices and niches (pockets) between the gums and teeth.
This is important for three reasons.
-
To remove the plaque bacteria, that will continue to grow, causing infection around the tooth and eventually loss of teeth. This is a condition that is commonly known as gum or periodontal disease. Most adult tooth loss is from this cause. Unfortunately, it is often undetected since it is usually painless and has few symptoms until the final stages.
-
To prevent bad breath or malodour, since the main cause of bad breath comes from bacterial colonies that live on crevices of teeth and gums, surface of the tongue and throat. This is a situation that many people experience but is often left untreated or is accepted as normal.
-
To maintain good oral health. Various research studies have found links between periodontal disease and higher incidence of developing serious illnesses and condition such as heart disease, diabetes, and the delivery of pre-term low birth weight babies.
Periodontal disease is preventable and treatable. It is the main cause of tooth loss in most western countries. With good cleaning at home and regular visits to the dental hygienist it is possible to keep healthy teeth and gums with minimal trouble for a lifetime.
Is it time for your continuing care maintenance?
N.B. (the general recommendations from the dental profession for most people is 6 monthly. However patients with periodontal disease or at higher risk often need a 3 monthly maintenance visit).
